I ran the lynx -source http://go-gnome.com |sh and it told me that I was on a debian based system and it added the line to my sources.list and ran atp-get install for me. No errors or anything but still no helix either. Or at least I can't get the smaller panel. I tried the apt-get install task-helix-panel and it did not find the package. I did notice that when I run the apt-get upgrade it says that it is omitting packages and one of them is the gnome panel and I think the gnome-core was in there too. I tried to apt-get upgrade gnome-panel and it said no packages found also. Can anyone tell me how to correct this? Oh and I will add, Debian rocks still. This apt-get thing is wonderful.

Thanks,
Mis

I don't know for sure what you mean by "Or at least I can't get the smaller panel".

Did you log out and back into X?

Rod

Try deleting your gnome configuration files such as those in the .gnome directory (note the . before the directory name) of your home directory and reinstall. The new settings should take effect. Make sure and back your home directory up. There are probably more elegant solutions to this problem but this worked for me (actually I think I deleted all the .gnome directories) but anyway back your stuff up first.

Before you go and reinstall the whole thing put a file .xinitrc in your home directory (if it's missing) and add the line exec gnome-session

I tried that first as well as removing the .gnome directory for a certain user and both times I logged back in I got blackbox instead of gnome, BUT no errors telling me why I didn't get gnome. I will try removing and reinstalling helix and see it that helps, thanks for the quick replies. I will probably be back tonight if it doesn't work. Actually if anyone can tell me how to resize the panel at the bottom I would be content.

Right-click on the panel, or do whatever it is that brings up a menu that isn't associated with a button. Go from the menu->Panel->Properties->Size. This part doesn't sound like a helix problem. And for the record, I had Gnome problems with Debian too. Might I ask you if your icons on your desktop work? More specifically, is gmc (gnome midnight commander...the tool Gnome uses to explore your home directory, etc...) up and running well?

That would be the problem, there is not an option to resize it so that is why I don't think it is installing completely. I don't use the icons, I use the panel with enlightenment, Windowmaker right now though. I haven't tried any of the other gnome things, I will when I get home and let you know though.

try typing "dselect" and when you select your packages, do a search for "helix" or "task" (done by typing the / key). I know that there are 3 or 4 vital core things you must apt-get in order to have a fully-functional helix desktop, and they all begin with "task".
