Is it supported in Linux and if so, would you happen to know what driver/module it uses?

First of all, ensure you have PnP OS disabled in the system bios as that alone can prevent PCI devices from being detected properly.

What does

lsmod

show as the loaded modules. Run as root or specify the full path.

/sbin/lsmod

<edit>

I didn't find much at G4L on the 440x or http://www.broadcom.com/drivers/support.php

Any Linux drivers provided on the motherboard CD?

Do you know how to access your system bios? Most pc's use the 'delete' key (right after the first beep on boot). Others such as Compaq use F10 while I believe Dell uses F1.

Look through the bios options for something like PnP Aware OS and change to 'NO'. Consult your motherboard manual if necessary.

Thanks for the link you gave erlier. I downloaded the driver and installed it (with help from my dad) and now it works. the PnP isn't important.....thanks a lot :D

Glad to help... Good job.

That driver (Broadcom's NetXtreme BCM57xx series NICs, and BCM4401 based Ethernet products) works for your 440X?
