Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with this setup. I'm trying to implement Squid in a strictly Windows 2003 and Windows XP enviroment to cache the WIndows updates. I have Squid setup at home and I can do this with no problems, but the problem is at home all my traffic goes through the Squid box out to the internet and it's in transparent mode. Here at work they dont want us going through the squid machine, they just want to be able to point the browsers at the squid machine (for strictly doing windows updates) and then change the browser back afterwards. The reason for all this is we are using a T-1 line for internet access, and in an office of roughly 80-100 people (depends on if we have consultants traveling), the updates for an XP machine could take hours, not too mention for Windows updates they use a packet shaper to only allow a small percentage of the bandwidth for doing them. So I have redhat 9 up right now, it's in Transparent mode, and it seems to be working for standard caching, but when I try to go to windows updates it doesnt cache the updates. I spent about 4-5 hrs on google yesterday researching this and although others have seen this, there's no solution. So any help would be appreciated.

Depending on how you are setup there, it is possible to run a windows update server locally. We are setting it up here... don't know if we are getting a special deal for education or not.. but I do know there is a "free" corporate update server setup available if you are running a Win2k based domain controller.

Yeah, I've seen SUS and there's a few other options that we looked at, the problem is that we have a Net-Ops team (corporate office) that will complain if we go installling IIS on our 2003 servers (they have nothing better to do than scan our servers on the weekend for IIS and SQL), we tried to get them to approve it a few months ago and they just dont see it happening. They actually didnt approve the linux caching server at corporate eithor, but I can hide the linux machine easier than I can hide anything on windows, so basically the Linux Caching solution would be the easiest for us.
