I've downnloaded the ISO for Debian, and I want to install that, but first I want to know the essentials that I should have before I do it. ie: gcc, glib and stuff like that... please post if you have any suggestions...
thx
i dont understand, if you have the iso then just burn it to a cd and install, then you will have all that good stuff already set up and ready to go

Decompress the ISO/Burn to cd/Whatever. I'm not sure on this because I installed Debian from a few floppies. What type of connection are you on? Provided that you're on a high-speed connection, you can apt-get everything you'd ever want (type "dselect" at the bash prompt once it's installed and you'll get the idea). You just need a means to get your internet connection going, and from what I understand, that's on the first CD...I hear that most of the essentials are on the first CD. The Debian install is completely self-contained, so you don't need gcc or anything like that to install it. And hey...if I can do it from floppies, you'll be sitting pretty with an ISO image. Good luck, cause Debian does kick *** :)

the Cd contains tons of stuff and no matter what pre-package you get, it will include the essentails. And if you decide to go package by package, the essentails would be listed as going to be installed, dont need to mess with them

Forget about kde... Thatīs not included. You might want to check out kde.debian.net, they gave you information on how to install it via apt-get.
Btw, I downloaded both cd1 and cd2, and I have to insert cd2 very often. Xchat, Licq, Mozilla, etc. Mostly internet apps.
And by saying you just want the "basics", basic is just command line (imho). Ok, Xfree86 with some simple windowmanager (blackbox, windowmaker, icewm, etc) can still be pretty basic. But kde is NOT basic, imho :)

sure it is... granted, KDE has a lot to it, but it is THE window manager, which makes it essential :P I'm downloading the 2.1 version for debian right now... I currently run mandrake, but I'm not satisfied.. :( Anyway, as for dling the second cd, there really isn't any need I don't think, it would be a whole lot less time consuming to just go dload licq and anything else I may need. Other than the basics that debian will get me, I'm going to install XFree86 4.02, KDE 2.1, StarOffice 5.2, and update the kernel to 2.4.2, and some other little things that I already have, but those are just minor things... Other than that, anybody have a suggestion on what else I should get?

You want the basic and downloaded over two days? . Base install is only 14 floppies. Then you can pretty much get the rest with APT-GET. It's the prefer way since you can get the latest and greatest rather than some old version and upgrade it (spending twice as much time). What I used to do is I do it just before I go to bed. Then in the morning, it's all pretty. :)

two days is: while I slept one night, then at school that day, and then while I slept again the next night.. done by that morning... I'll be a DHCP server and have networking crap all installed, along with some other stuff if I like what I see on the cd, just got the ISO because it makes it easier.. I'm trying to get anything that I may want rather than a but load of stupid progs that I'll never use.
