Hi guys!
After 2 month-time, a douzaine distros, 3 modems, I have finally made my netconnection with my modem compaq PSB224 fax-modem! How?
Well I first installed Red Hat 6.2 (that was the oldest I could get a hold of due to my Compaq Presario 48 mb ram, 233 mhz AMD K6 and 2 gb) which I have to say works fine on my old computer and is easy to use compare the other distros that I have seen (maybe fedora is better... who knows)

After the installation I installed the ltmodem6.00.c2.tar.gz (if I recall it well) with the usual way (I had to use ltmodem6.00c2.tar.gz because I had Kernel 2.2 on Red Hat 6.2). I opened tmp directory when I'm using a shell, then from there unziped the content of the file ltmodem6.00.c2.tar.gz into cd /tmp. I opened then that new directory! Still using shell! then typed ./build_module, then ./ltinst2 and to conclude./autoload!!! I got lucky coz most of others usually take a longer way! U can see all this, even the longer way, in this link

http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2050#9512

I recommande U to read 1st read before doing anything!

Like in any good tale there is always a HOWEVER...
Here come the HOWEVER... I get connected, I know that... because my phone says "Extension in use" and I even see the blinking sign on the bottom left in the panel although when I start my Netscape navigator (the one that comes along with RH 6.2) it says that server unknown! No mater what I type (even www.justlinux.com which was the first one I did) it doesn't work! I tried to change setup in the Netscape but I didn't know how to get to it! Plz HELP ME!

Guys, I couldn't have made it so far without your help! So plz guys, one last push and I'm there! I need your help, don't let me down now!

Thx!

Sounds like it might be a DNS issue. If you can ping or browse to sites by their IP address, but not by their URL, that's almost certainly the case.

1. Once your modem connects, open a terminal window and try to ping Google by its IP address:

ping 216.239.39.147

2. If that works, try by URL:

ping www.google.com

3. Open a web browser and type the following in the location bar:

http://216.239.39.147

If #1 and #3 work, but #2 fails, check your /etc/resolv.conf file to make sur that the IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers are entered there. If they aren't, open the file in a text editor and add them. The basic format of /etc/resolv.conf is as follows:search your ISP's domain name
nameserver IP address of your ISP's Primary DNS server
nameserver IP address of your ISP's Secondary DNS server

Hi DMR, U were right! Everything worked as U said excpet the phase #2, the one with:
ping www.google.com

So I wrote down in /etc/resolv.conf the 2 ips that I took from Win98, but I think the only thing left now is the domain name! This is the tricky part; how do I find out my ISP domain's name? Can I use Win 98 to find it?

If the domain of ISP is for example "WonderBoutLinux", how do I write that first line? "domain WonderBoutLinux" or how?

While I was playing around with RedHat 6.2, I find a command line "linuxconf" in which I could check out and change some configuration, such as DNS, and such? Do U think it is better to use that one instead?

Thx a lot! U made me had more courage and confidence! Keep helping people! that's a good thing!

Do they have a website? Mine is rogers.com so I would use

search rogers.com
or
domain rogers.com

Hi WBL,

I answered your question in my response to your PM, but Mike (mdwatts) beat me to posting it here- his answer is correct.

It works! It actually works! I'm writting this using using my Red Hat! Wow,
I finally made it thx to U guys! How I did?
Well, I called my ISP and they gave me the 2 nameservers needed to
connect to their server (which was weird because they did look anything
like the numbers I have on Windows). Then while setting up kppp, I wrote the
name I wanted and such and there is another window for DNS and there,
I filled in the 2 new nameservers I got from my ISP, then ok. When I tried
everything worked perfectly.
Well perfect is too much to say, there are some stuff that I need to change
such as my Netscape navigator or any browser, I seem to have some little
problem to use totally my hotmail. I'm thinking about installing OPERA,
what do U think? is it a good idea? do U think there is any better browser!?
fell free to give your opinions!

Meanwhile, I'm on the top of the world now :)

Thx a lot guys! I appreciate all your help! keep up the good work! And I have
got to say this: "This forum rocks!!!!!!!!!!!";)
