After having a kinda debate over open v closed source with someone, I decided to go and try out Linux. Problem is there are so many distibutions, it's crazy.

Anyhoo, I downloaded Knopplix, which was suggested to me by the person I debated with. I've managed to get it run off the cd completely, which is cool.

However, I don't know if it's the right one for me. At home, I use the following system:

Asus motherboard think its' GA7VA one, with 6 USB ports
Athlon XP 2400+
512Mb PC2700 RAM
80Gb HDD (unsure of make)
128Mb Geforce4 Ti4200 Graphics card
Sony DDU1621 DVDROM drive
Samsung 248F (i think) CDRW (48/24/48)
Samsung syncmaster sm151s TFT monitor
Bog standard MS internet keyboard and mouse
Hewlett-PackardHP940C printer
USB scanner (can't remember the make)

I'm just wondering what would be suitable for my home system? I want to run it and compare it with Windows XP HE. Seeing as I'm new to Linux, I want one that will be easy to configure and will work with my printer and scanner.

Also, I have a system I use at uni:

Intel P4 1.8GHz
256Mb RAM
60Gb HDD Western Digital
nVidia GeForce2 Mx440 graphics card
standard Dell 17" CRT monitor
Liteon DVDrom LTD163 drive
Liteon CDRW LTR2410M drive

On this system, I have a network connection that gives me broadband speed access to the internet. The ethernet adapter thing connects to the system via a USB port, which I couldn't get to work with Knopplix. Again, I'd like a version that runs on the above spec and am considering to replace windows xp or at least run one or the other via boot options.

Also, will standard windows xp software eg MS Office XP, CorelDraw 11, PaintShop Pro 8 etc work with Linux?
