Cannot connect to the internet under linux!!!

I've used several linux distrubutions and none of them have let me establish a connection to the internet, after dialing I get ..."don't know what to do starting pppd and hoping for the best" and then I always get the message "PPP daemon died suddenly!" (or something like that) while negotiating PPP... I have a USRobotics external k56 modem (model Raster 568603)...help!!!!

hey actually the thing is may be u dont have the execution rights on the ppp.
do one thing , as root give execution rights to (chmod 777) to ppp,pppd and kppp everything.then try it most probably it will sovlve the problem
or if not u can also try wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf


and then run wvdial at the shell.

Ok...but I do not know how to give execution rights!! I'm a newbie!! ;-)
Another interesting thing happens... RH dialer does dial out and then the daemon dies, but kppp doesn't even dial out, the program hangs trying to initialize the modem... tried resetting modem at the terminal but didn't work...!!!
