Hello all,

I have been given an assignement at work to create documentation on a process that we have. This would not be an issue, but they are requiring screen shots to be added to the documentation. They are not going to be happy with a dump of text from the shell, the want a nice pictures from X. What can I say, I am writing documentation for Windows users.

While I have been using Linux for quite a while, most of my experience is with the command line, and not with the gui. ;) Yes I have true type fonts and other niceties, but I have never used any graphics programs.

The main issue here is what type of tools are available to get good screen shots of X. I know that gimp can be used to edit these, but I do not know of a good program for the screen shots.

Any thoughts or recomendations would be apreciated.

Thanks in advance
Jobu.

You don't say what distro you are running, but I think most distros with a GUI come with some sort of screen capture prog. I know on mine (Mandrake 7.2 - I know, I know, but Debian 2.2r2 is in the post and due this weekend) one was installed be default even on my limited (500Mb) install. If you have a GUI installed, then check out the menus, and you will probably find one.

The Gimp can get screen captures as well:

"File -> Acquire -> Screen Shot..."

Thanks for the mentioning of the option in gimp. I just installed it, and was able to find what you were mentioning without difficulty.

As to the other persons question about which distro, I am running redhat6.1 with a few mods. Shutdown a bunch of services, and have added ssh for secure file transfer and remote sessions.

Thanks again for the info on gimp. Now that I have that, I will be able to get my job done.
