i have installed Slackware 9.1 with the KDE WM, but there is no sound.
i have a soundblaster card installed, and speakers plugged into the card.
i don't know what soundblaster i have, but its an internal one, (any way of finding out what it is within linux? i don't know much about linux, only basic commands within the konsole)
any ideas?

See if
lspci
in the konsole as root will tell you which soundcard you have.
Also type
lsmod
to check to see which soundcard related modules are loaded. Ensure you have PnP OS disabled in the bios.
We do have LOTS of previous threads here on soundcard related problems of which you should find all sorts of suggestions you can first try.
Run lspci to see details of the cards that are connectet to your computer...
I think that there are more options to get more detailed views as well so that you can find out what the chipset of the card is. See:
man lspci
for more information on the different arguments that you can give it.
Once you findout what the chipset is then you can see if there are any drivers you could visit the ALSA website for more information on installing the correct driver for you.

Bookmark www.google.com/linux as it will come in very handy for most Linux problems etc. I searched there for 'alsa' and found their homepage.
So does
lsmod
show any soundcard modules as being loaded? Search the JL forums for i.e. sblive and you will find lots of troubleshooting suggestions to try for yourself.

i have slackware 9.1 installed on my computer, and i have looked on the alsa site for the drivers, but i have no idea what it means
Here (http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=ESS+Technology&card=ES1371&chip=ES1371&module=ens1371#Inst) is the page i've been looking at.
can anyone point me in a more simplified direction? (i've been using linux for about a day now, and know a few basic commands at a push!)
thanks in advance.
(btw i have searched the forum, and found a few unrelating posts)

I've merged your new thread into this one since they are both on 'no sound'.

I hate to ask this but you did check your volume options in your mixer program, right? Often by default it seems like the sound is turned off in KDE. If you open Kmixer you just need to verify that your output volume is up at least half and that your input from your computer (I think they call it "line") is also up 70% or so.
Good luck!
P.S. There's also a sound check volume in the KDE control center somewhere. Have you given that a test?

All the required modules for your soundcard ARE loaded, so it must be device permission related (/dev/dsp etc.), volume levels or sound is muted.
Run the ALSA soundcard mixer and check all settings.
Then startup a sound app at the commandline (konsole etc.), play a sound file and see what errors you get.
Please try searching the JL forums as this has to be the most popular problem posted here.

Don't feel stupid; I think everyone has had that problem at one time or another (I know I have). The important thing is that you were able to fix it and you can tell someone else how to fix it.
