I was just curious about what speed most linux users are running on these days, internet wise, and what provider. I see other things like who runs what distro, but lets get even small to who downloads/uploads at _ speeds, it'd be interesting to see how many 56k 33k !14k! users exist. I'm also curious as to who hosts sirveces but thats a little too deep(only if you want to answer)

me

2.3mb avg 4mb max
245 kbs upload (seems faster when accesing vidoe from home)
comcast

i host a web server and ftp for friends and family

Your download speed : 1224949 bps, or 1224 kbps.
A 149.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 218292 bps, or 218 kbps.
Bellsouth DSL- $42.95/month
A static address is about $10/month extra- so no server here.

100mbps burstable. Ok, that's not my personal bandwidth, but it's the bandwidth I'm sharing with a few servers at the moment. Current utilization is just under 10Mbps, so I've got some room to play with :)

Normally I'm on 4Mbps/256kbps cable.

I dont have a cox modem my modem is a toshiba pcx2600 bought at bestbuy for $60 bucks cheaper than renting and probably beter performance. I did have sbc dsl but the phone lines were crap and they refused to replace them. so I went with cox. the crap lines were from the street box to the home. I rewired the home myself.

Now at work, woohoo!, being a part of the University of Georgia, we get to connect to the backbone. Of course the desktops are limited (Mine does 100-150 MB/sec) but in the classrooms and labs they have the fastest connections for the remote lectures- I've been told it goes to several hundred MB/sec so there is no lag for questions and answers. And I think the cable is the limiter.

Here on 60$ CDN cable extreme edition. it's 4mbps down and 600 something up. (no download/upload limit :)) We are currently right now 6h30pm, right in the peek time, so i guess that should be more than acceptable :) I can download about 25-30 gigs per day with this connection. :) but it takes bandwith to fill over 1.2 terabytes :)

as for services, i run ftp, ssh, and vnc to be able to access my home network when i'm at work.

It varies on Verizon DSL:
152 KB/sec - 225 KB/sec down,
119 kb/sec - 300 kb/sec up
Lately, they've been covering my TCP/IP overhead and then some. I imagine they'll keep increasing the speed.

bandwidthplace.com clocks me in at 2.5 megabits down and about 400k up. I use Adelphia for my ISP (cable). On fast servers I can download at about 400k. I can upload at about 60k. I pay $56.00 a month.

SBC ADSL

384 kbit down, and either 128kbit up. That's the absolute minimum -- most downloads go somewhere near 70-80 kilobytes/sec, so the actual speed is closer to the cap, which is set at 768 kbits/sec.

According to adslguide.co.uk, my current download speed is 1200kbits/sec (after overhead is excluded), and my current upload is about 128kbits/sec (after overhead is excluded). So apparently it's going at about double the cap... hmm.

You've probably got a whale resting on the cable- pinching the bandwidth. :)

1,5 mb/s down and 256kb/s up (costs about 68 us dollars) adsl always at the same speed, but the big catsh is that foreign downloads costs 100mb=3,4 us dollars, but inland downloads are free, all the most kommon linuxes are mirrored here but if i want to try something less known like mephis reasently it costs a lot.

(I am living in Iceland, an for those how do not know where that is, ido not blame you, that is in the middle of the north atlantik see between canada and europa, some migth know the singer Bjork.

You may want to try a different site for your speed test. Or a different time of day. My results vary somewhat. Sometimes I'll get 3 mbps down. Sometimes I'll get 2. It just depends on congestion. What kind of connection do you have?

Alltel DSL here at the house, 100Mbit ethernet to a few OC-12s at work - shared with a ton of people of course, but afternoons and evenings I can get as much as 3MB per sec downloaded...

Looks like RR uncorked things around here finialy. Just last week it was still showing half that on dsl reports. They sent an email out over 2 months about touting 3mb down.

It depends on whether I'm home or at school. I'll start with home:
Allegedly a 56 kbps connection, never connects faster than about 26, and never downloads over about 2. Uploads are about the same

At school: We have 10 Mbps connections, but unfortunately someone in their infinite wisdom decided that we would connect to the network with DSL (I know, it's really messed up), so I'm limited to 80 kbps up and down. I download all my .isos in the computer labs on campus because they're normal ethernet connections so the bandwidth isn't limited as much. Plus I can ssh into a linux box on campus and nohup an ftp session and leave it running overnight.

Then again, in view of latest developments:
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/newsvac/04/03/15/2025214.shtml
there will be fewer inadequacies in the future?

We can always hope.

It is sad,

At the office I hae 128K ISDN, sharing with toms of users, plus e-mail, and a couple of web sites (all servers are Linux of course!!)

But my rate when no-one is at the office is on average around 25K, what is interesting though, is that one of my colleagues is using XP, and he get much slower rates than me!! (heheh, Linux has a better TCP/IP stack that windows!!!)

At home I use dial up, 33.6K to the office, and 56K to the ISP.

Sad, isn't it???

Actually, it's ADSL. I should be grateful - it's double what I'm paying for. The local ISP/phone company is now getting competition for the first time in almost 40 years so they're becoming a bit frantic. :D
