hi
i had tried to install my modem which is a pctel chipset modem.though the installation did not work,after i restarted the computer the linux did not load properly.
some of the checking where it says ok is done and then this line comes
" Bringing up interface ppp0 " and then it stops
please suggest something to make it load properly again.
the package is red hat 9 and i am a newbie so please tell me what to do in simple steps

What do you mean by installing a modem, is it hardware install or software driver?
If hardware, then either try to disable the PnP OS (plug and play OS) option in the BIOS, so the BIOS assignes an IRQ to your modem, if it doesn't work, move the modem to a different PCI slot (in case it's an internal modem), if it still no luck, remove it alltogether and consider bying an external modem.
In case of software driver it depends on what you installed and where it went to. Possibly the diver for your modem is no good.
If you installed Lilo or Grub you could pass single parameter to the kernel:
boot: <title for your linux> single
it will bring you to runlevel 1, where you could try to repare things, like remove the bad driver (usualy it is located in /lib/modules/<kernel_version>/kernel/drivers/net area)
