Hey all, Im trying to decide on what distro to use. I have SuSe and Slackware disks all here and burnt, and I am pretty much a complete newbie to linux.
I want to learn linux rather quickly, and make it look really cool. I prefer making things run the way I want to, but easily.
So I am wondering, suse or slack?
My suggestion would be to try both and then decide which one you like most.
Slackware is a distro that forces you to learn more, that's because you have to do things more manually.

<3 slackware. i started with it, still my favorite.. i've tried fedora and a couple others, but, damn...slackware...::drool:: ..
gentoo is another great one, starting to grow on me , appeals to me for the same reason slackware does, but it has portage..and that's just convenient..
I totally agree with serz:

I started on Mandrake and now am full time Slack. I learnt more from using Slack for a month than ever using Mandrake.
I have not used Suse other than the Live Eval and it looked good but I didn't think it was anything extra special or different to what Mandrake offers.
Go with Slack!:)

I switched from Redhat to Suse. Talk about, almost too easy. It took nothing to install, no manual configuration or anything, Yast is great. I just got DSL, plugged my ethernet cable in, and I was on. I did nothing, literally, nothing and it just worked. I wanted to get more multimedia right out of the box, and of course, at the time, no high speed, so Suse it was. I think it is a little better than Mandrake because supermount in Mandrake is still a little flaky. I will substitute for right click --> mount, or mount in the command line inconcenience for reliability.
Suse could make me get lazy, but I am still a command line junkie. If you are brand new, Suse is great, and Mandrake is great. If you want to get your hands dirty, then probably slack.
If I didn't use this comp for telecommuting, I would probably play more with Gentoo or Slack. As it is, I am enjoying the convenince of Suse. :D

P.S. I can never find Mandrake in the stores here, I will take it for a test drive now that I can download it. My friends/family are still on Redhat 8.0 and Mandrake 8.2. Soon time to start upgrading.

I don't think you screw it up, rather you did not configure it.
Slackware boots by default to init level 3 (no X). Make a quick search here on "slackware xfree86setup XF86Config". Also the book (http://slackware.com/book/) will get you started.
