Hello.... I am thinking of trying Redhat Linux becuase i cant get the sound thing to work correctly on Mandrake 8.1. I noticed that all the ISO's for RedHat Linux are in a i386 sub directory on FTP sites. Does this mean that it was designed for a 386?? Im just worried that it wont be as nice looking and have nice features as Mandrake if it is for a 386! Also is it easy to setup for a newbie, and does it setup your dual boot automatically like Mandrake? Thanks.

LOL, don t worry, it will work on any intel compatible cpu.

About you sound problem, I wouldn t consider to swap distros so fast since computers have dozens of things to be configured. What if Red Hat doesn t configure your graphics card? AND your sound card?

I believe that a reasonable solution is to write here your configuration and type of card and some of the exprert guys will take the time to answer something related to your specific question.

Please believe me, it s too hard to find the distro that will make anything work at once. The only case this happened to me was with Mandrake 8.1!

So, reconsider is my suggestion.

hehe.. Ok. I asked once but didnt mention the type of sound card. I really like Mandrake 8.1, and if i could fix the sound problem it would be great. I get sound, but it sounds like a skippy cd, or a bad connection between the computer and speakers.. Yet it is fine in windows.
I cannot find where in Windows it says what kind of soundcard i have, stupid windows. Anyway, if it helps at all, it is being run on an HP pavilion computer package.. For the mean time i guess ill go screw around in Linux, try and fix somthing.

My First Post, wow!
Ok, In windows, all you got to do to get your Sound Card is right click on 'My Computer' and click properties, and then goto the Device Manager Tab. Your soundcard is probably under the Multimedia selection.
 Amazing, no?

and if you are on windows xp or 2000, just click on start, then control panel, then system, then hardware, then devices, then multimedia. you got it.

Your sound card is more than likely a Riptide sound card which is part of the modem. Since I have a cable connection I pulled the card and replaced it with a sound blaster live.

The hardware that I have found to work with Sun OS x.86, Red Hat, and Mandrake without problems is:

Sound Blaster Live sound card
3Com 3C905C-TX-M Ehternet card
ATI Expert 128 Video card
HP 8100 CD Writer

Soundblaster 128 PCIs work great as well.

And if you have an AC97 chipset on your motherboard you can use that.

Hey Ch2i5, your signature is hilarious. I remember seeing that on
SNL! It was sweet.

I've had my share of problems with mandrake 8.1 but hardware detection wasn't one of them, it even detected my usb printer and set it up. Mandrake didn't compile in cups support for their gimp-print drivers though so I had to go rebuild them but no big deal

To keep the SNL theme going, hope I remember it correctly, here's another :)
