I guess this could be a 'how I did it thread', except the sum total of what I did was plug the DSL modem in to my ethernet card and I was online. (My eth card was already set up for DHCP).
144.9 Kbytes/sec as we speak downloading Knoppix 3.3. Alright, is Linux too easy now? I was expecting to have to configure something!? :D

P.S. Learning quickly to hit servers on the other side of the world to maximize bandwidth. Knoppix download started with a US server was running at 3.4 Kbytes/sec or 40+ hours. :)

Well, it is bridged DHCP, and I am likely one of the first adopters in my area on my 'Wan', so I doubt I will enjoy that kind of throughput forever. I am definatly turned of 53,333, 52,000 and 49,333 dialup rates forever! :D
Strange thing is, just rebooted out of knoppix, it tells me DHCP error, no IP yes, but it just works like a charm. Go figure?

I went from dial-up (2 - 3 kBps) to cable (60 - 80 kBps) and now to SBC's "Expert Plus" DSL package which costs about as much as what I was paying to cable ($45 per month). All in less than a year.
Didn't have to confgure anything either, thank goodness for DHCP! Like you I "hop" around searching for the fastest servers, no matter where they are. Throughput speeds, well let's just say that I downloaded MDK 10 Community, all three disks, in 50 minutes. I was actually averaging around 580 kBps, so who needs a T-1 ;). Sad part is how fast I have gotten accoustomed to my new throughput speeds. I never in my wildest dreams ever figured that if a download dropped below 120 kBps that I would be wondering what was going on to cause such a SLOW connection. LOL!

A good site with speed tests, database of other people's results so you can compare yours, and a tweaking test that works with linux as well as Windows and Apple.
DSL Reports (http://www.dslreports.com/stest)
It uses java, so you need java on your system.

It took a little bit to get through, but twice, I got around 1200 Kb/s down, 110 up. Not the full 1500 down, 128 up, but I am at the outer limits of my phone companies universe. :-)
MMYoung, I already know what you mean. Downloading downloader for X, only getting aroung 30 Kb/s, (6 times my best ever on dialup), think to self, ah well, it will only be about 45 seconds, I won't kill and try to find a faster server. :)
