Anyone using CRUX Linux?

Im considering installing it on a 450Mhz AMD with 256 of ram.

I've had it on several computers, though.
I liked it a lot. It's lean and fast.

is the gui more like mandrake or yellow dog?

kde/xwidows or gnome?

Not at all like Mandrake...I can't say about YellowDog.
With those specs I'd stay away from KDE and Gnome anyway. You'll be happier probably with X and a *box of some sort. Crux is minimal, so whatever you want, you'll have to use the CRUX packaging system (which has anything you'll need anyway) or compile from source.
