Ok,
I have an IBM 760EL,
133 with 16 megs,
2.1 gig HD, 6X cd,
uh, 33.6 modem, uh, uh.. etc..
What linux would run smoohtly on it?
Right now its Win98SE.
I only use it for..
lord..
nintendo games,
and word perfect.

Win98SE on 16mb RAM?!? Great Googly Moogly. You must be a glutton for punishment.
Anyways, for such a lowend system I would suggest http://metalab.unc.edu/vectorlinux
32mb or more would be recomended if you want to run X though (though it can be done on less). If you have a CDROM drive Debian would be a decent choice too, otherwise a floppy install will greatly tax your patience.

X will run just fine with 8mb of ram, just don't use gnome or KDE. Go for a smaller window manager like blackbox or windowmaker, and keep the res and bpp to at most 800x600x16, and 640x480x8 would even be fast on that machine. Using the lower res allows you to pick a more generic and smaller/faster X server. Redhat 6 may be a good choice. I also here Caldera or SuSE work well with laptops, but I haven't tried either myself.
