First, is anyone having trouble with RPM in RH 7.2? Here's my problem:

I'm going to be doing some RedHad training in a few months. Previously I used mostly Slackware and simply compiled any software I needed to install. While I still have Slackware on my home server, I decided to put Linux on my laptop (wiping XP from it).

It's an IBM Thinkpad 390X - all the hardware, including the winmodem, is supported under Linux.

I downloaded, burned, and installed RH 7.2 on the laptop. New installation on a wiped hd. I didn't even do a custom install - I chose the Standard Laptop install. Though I did choose both KDE and Gnome, making KDE my primary.

Anyway, after install I download a few RPM programs to install. I go to the RPM Package Manger in KDE that is under the System Utils menu. It opens the RPM file and comes up with a little error window. There's no description or text, except for a 'RPM error' of some sort. I can get out of the window and actually install the RPM, the program even works, but while it's installing I can't see the progress bar at the bottom because the error window comes back.

It's really strange. I should take some screenshots and post them here I suppose. Just curious if anyone is having similar problems.

Thanks!

Try plain old rpm from the command line. If there's problems with someones gui for rpm then it's not really rpm related.

ya use command line rpm .. if you want a gui, Red Carpet, is pretty good, ive used it before, but i prefer tarballs, its jus easier to deal with for me ..

I got exactly the same error in RH 7.1 with KDE. The RPM's always installed and the programs ran without a hitch.

Command line it is then! Actually, I should try it with Gnome too.
