Either do I. :)

Tried any of the normal troubleshooting routines such as looking through your system logfiles in /var/log, checked to see if the soundcard modules are loading with 'lsmod', checked the sound output device in Gaim (if it has that option) and verified the volumes are set in the sound mixer?

Does sound work with anything else? Have you tried?

<!-- Warning, mini rant --!>

Most likely the Arts sound, try setting it to ESD. I hate Arts, and is the main reason I don't use KDE anymore. Once it begins to use that sound daemon, no other ones can use sound. KDE is becoming Windows as far as taking everything over, with 3.2 you cannot disable Arts AFAIK, it always seems to startup and block everything even when it says its disabled.

What soundcard?

The SBLive can use either the emu10k1 (kernel driver) or snd-emu10k1 (ALSA driver).

My CMI8738 can use either the cmipci (kernel) or snd-cmipci (ALSA) module.

The ALSA driver for your soundcard? Are the soundcard modules loaded? Have you checked?

Yes they are loaded.

look in ps -ef to see if there is any process that might be using sound. if yes then kill it.
that is what j79zlr talking about. if you use gaim at first then sound will work. now you start some other app which uses sound and the sounds of gaim will be gone. i experienced this problem when i was on MDK. if i started gaim and had a chat, then started XMMS it would say that audio driver is busy and the opposite is true too. start XMMS...then gaim = no sound.
i don't know any permanent solution but imo you should see what you are running.
