Is there a solution for the (quite well documented) problem with tearing on the TV-display when running TV-Out with a NVIDIA-card under Linux?

I've tried to set the TV as the primary (and only) display device, but I still get tearing. Setting the 'video output' in mplayer to gl2 seems to reduce the tearing, but doesn't eliminate it.

Could it be possible that the drivers are hardcoded to VSYNC at 60Hz, and that it would give me tearing since I'm running TV-Out on a PAL-television?

Possible yeah -- I seem to remember something related to this on nvnews.net's forums a while ago. Might want to check that out sometime -- search for "tearing tv-out" or something.

Otherwise, do you have an NTSC TV you might be able to try? I doubt it, but maybe...

The nVidia README says something in Appendix J ("Configuring TV-Out") about using an Option "TVStandard" "<something>" -- see the actual README for the various values possible for <something>. They depend on where you are (or where your TV came from, actually). This option goes into the Screen section that defines your TV.

The problem is now solved. The answer is too long to take in here, but basically I followed the advice given in http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=53082#317892.

With some help from APPENDIX R in the NVIDIA-readme, I finally managed to get the overlay-support switched from the CRT to the TV.

There is no tearing left, and I won't have to keep XP around as a one gig+ media player any longer.

(FYI: I've removed the extra http:// from your link. ;))

Good to hear it!
