I am almost willing to bet that almost all of you who complain about 9.2 being cruddy have/had not bothered to download and install the Errata Updates and fixes from the Mandrake site.
When I first installed 9.2 to replace my smoothly installed 9.1 I too encountered lots of instability and bugs but after installing the Errata updates one week later way back in November I think it was, have had no troubles since and in fact have also installed the 2.4.24 +4GB kernel with no problems. My 9.2 is running like a dream and fast.
I no sooner click on something and "snap" it is there.
I have experimented with installing the 2.6.3 kernel but it just stuffed things up. Would freeze ala Windoze, regularly crashed etc and when I clicked on anything it would take sometimes up to 3 minutes or even more to open.
It was so bad in fact that I had to do a clean Install all over again.
Obviously the kernel was not at fault, it is designed for a different install process so I too am looking forward Mandrake 10 which will have that done from the start.
Just a small note of interest. Australias widely known Everything Linux Australia sells EVERYTHING related to LINUX such as Vendor CD sets of all Linux formats and does not appear to promote any particular one over another in its advertising. It has a listing of the top selling product of the Week and top selling product of the Month.
Mandrake 9.1 then 9.2 have been No. 1 for nearly all of the past 52 weeks and is still No.1 this past week.
Red Hat and Fedora are some where around 7 or 8 and most of the geek ones often referred to in this and other forums are not even in the top 10 best sellers list
We are talking about sold products here and not some kind of poll.
So maybe we Australians have a better grasp of what is eventuating in the real world.
