There's no best distro....

You can check Distrowatch (www.distrowatch.com), there's info about different distros.

Make a search in this forum too.

This is not linux installation related, moving to .iso confused.

i see you dont have many posts, so im assuming your newer to linux.

ill throw out the regulars:
mandrake,
fedora (RH),
and suse are good.
jamd is also good, but it no longer in development
if your looking live-cd,
mepis or
slax or
knoppix

boy, i really narrowed it down. now you still got 7 to choose from, taht is if you use oen i listed.

fedora is simple as can be to install....next next next finished.

I am having issues getting slackware to install, but i hear great things about it.

I have tried SUSE, but it was lacking some tools i am used to so I dropped it.

Mandrake is also very popular.

knoppix has a live cd i am toying with that has some great security tools on it for recovery of broken systems.

The greatest thing about linux is the ability to choose, which is something you never get from Microsoft.

Unfortunatly, I find that to also big a big weakness. I have spent the past month testing different distro's looking for the "right" one for me. I haven't found it yet.

Besides which distro to go with, you also get to pick which windows environment you want...again very many choices, very many opinions and very hard to pick.

But don't be discouraged...pick an easy distro to begin with and understand what linux is all about....coming from a Microsoft world, I am just not used to actually having a choice about what is on my computer.

Mandrake is the first one I tried that I stuck with. I'd tried Redhat and SuSE, but went back to Windows. However, they were earlier versions and this forum wasn't here. Or maybe the time just wasn't right. Anyway, last year I used Mandrake, then moved on to Debian which I'm using now. So Mandrake is probably a good one for you to start with. You can always try others, and probably will.

Everyone is going to suggest something different, but that's the beauty of linux..........choice. Try as many as you like or have patience for and pick what's right for you. Most people will agree that Mandrake and Red Hat / Fedora are the easiest to install and most user friendly. I personally started with RH a few years ago and went through a couple dozen different distros until I settled on Slack and Suse. That's MY favorite distros. Your needs / wants may lead you to another distro. Where else can you test drive the software for free?:D
