Anybody ever messed around with Esmith. The install was pretty funny. First you get a message that says This process will completely erase all information from this computer. Then to install, you type in accept. Again, you get the same warning. Then you have no options on formatting or setting up partitions. You choose your server and that is it. Kind of weird though, whenever you change your configuration, you have to reboot.

*hmmms*

Sounds like windows.

It may seem wierd compared to a 'normal' Linux install, but I can vouch for it's ease of use and effectiveness. I've been using e-smith on my home server for 4 months now without a single problem or reboot. INCREDIBLY stable and easy to administer. I recommend it to anyone wanting a no-hassle server. :D

i use it and i like it

what's the problem

why does everything have to be "i only like stuff that is too hard for anybody else to use"

what is wrong with making a linux distro that is easy to use

i don't get it

why am i a low-life winders wanna-be for using something that is really easy? if i don't have to wait 2 years to learn enough about linux to build my own server from scratch, what's wrong with an out of the box solution?

i don't understand this attitude of some linux users/zeolots, "it has to be too hard for those lesser intelligent people, or else it sucks" doesn't fly with me

ok, sorry for the rant, and i am realy sorry if i mis-read your attitude/intention mairving

you just hit my one good nerve i had left today, i like esmith and will continue to use it as i learn to build my own server from scratch using debian (so the "you have to buy linux zeolots don't flame me  )

maybe in a year or two, my custom built box will be capable of taking the place of my e-smith crutch, but i think e-smith has a legitimate place in the linux world.

there are people out there that would like an alternative to winders servers, but don't have the time/brains/resources/whatever to become a guru.

why do you think i am the least "linux knowledgable" linuxnewbie.org regular/heavy poster???

i have a lot of other stuff to do. i just want to get the job done now, learn when i have time later

whooooo!

again sorry for the rant, any moderator, please feel free to either delete this or move this to the rants forum, whatever

i just didn't see a "General Linux Question" in the original post, and i got really defensive and couln't stop typing :D

have a nice day! :)

*ducks and dodges*

*WOW*

hey FoBot ... I didn't see a question of any sort there either..

So I tossed out the *i think* rather obvious (smart a**ed) quip as so attached...
*sheesh* Its my (193325th) birthday dammit.. I was feeling in a smart**s mood since a few of my answers in the last few days have been successful in solving peoples problems.

Sorrrrrrryyyyyy I didn't mean to hit a nerve.. I'm just in a goodish mood this morning.

i am in a good mood now, that rant seems to have perked me up! :D

anyway, it wasn't your post that set me off, i didn't really even read yours at first

it was the first one , again, i may have misread/misinterpreted the intentions of the poster, if so, sorry for the disturbance

the real underlying problem (ie why i freaked out :o ), is that i am trying to get the company i work for to replace winders 95 file servers with e-smith, and i am fighting an uphill battle with the pro-microsoft management in my IT dept.

any linux server, especially a super easy one like e-smith, would save this company tons of support money, but it has to be in a easy to swallow package, like e-smith, or i have NO chance of pushing it

again, i apologize to the original poster, no offense intended :)

The intention of my post was certainly not to step on toes nor to start an ESmith flamefest. Sorry, if your feelings were hurt. I was mostly curious what others are using Esmith for. Several things I liked about it. I liked the fact that it was a small download and install. I liked the fact that like 'Highlander', "There can be only one" OS on your system and that is it. I am sure that it is a great, although specialized, OS for specific server needs. I wonder though why they chose the RedHat platform. Also curious why a restart is required after config changes.

This whole thing started when I obtained a Pentium 200 w/64M RAM & a 8GB HD. I downloaded and installed RedHat 7.0, Mandrake 7.1 & 7.2, E-smith, Slackware 7.1, SUSE 6.2, Turbolinux 6.0, Gentus Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Corel 2nd Ed, Caldera OpenLinux & a few others. ESmith had the oddest install. All but Caldera & Mandrake 7.2 worked right without any configuring after installation. Interesting experiment. Most of the systems configured my cable modem properly. A couple of the systems allowed root to be passwordless. That would be a bad thing with a cable connection. So out of all the distros, I have decided to keep Slackware 7.1.

sorry again :(

i figured as much, i was just in a bad mood, i guess and i don't know why i snapped like that, i am really quite a stable person, or so the doctors tell me ;)

as i explained above, i am trying to get my company to use it, so i am just on edge

they just posted an rpm at e-smith.org to make an e-smith server into an "internet jukebox" using mysql in 5 minutes. it is pretty cool and it would take me a long time to figure out how to do something like that on my own

i think it is red hat based for 2 reasons, the developers have used red hat the most and they felt the red hat users base was bigger. that is mostly a guess, but partly based on reading emails on their developers mailing list

have a nice day mairving! :)
