Im running 9.2, and its all buggy
from what I hear, thats a general
consensus. Is 9.1 cool? Should I
shutup and wait for 10.0. Or should
I just shutup until Im not such a
n00b?

Thanks (Unless I should shutup),
Evan

MDK 9.2 is the ONLY Linux distro that I had MAJOR problems with and I had been using 9.1 and 9.0 before that. I switched back to 9.1, then I found MEPIS (http://www.mepis.org) and am using it instead. Now I'm back with Slackware, mostly, and switch back and forth between MEPIS and Slackware with a smattering of XP for school work.

If you want to go ahead and give MDK 10 a try RC1 is out and you can download it, via ftp, at IBIBLIO (ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake/Mandrake-iso/i586).

Mdk 10 seems to be coming along very fast, hope we'll have a complete version fairly soon, with a shiny new kernel and ting. :)
I never saw any reason to upgrade to 9.2 from 9.1, tbh.

Are you having problems with 9.2? If not, stick with it. If you're having problems, then 9.1 might be a better choice. I use 9.2 on my PC at work, but still have 9.1 on all my PC's at home.

I ended up upgrading to 9.2 because I use a bunch of development version programs, and 9.2 has some libraries that are a bit more recent. I'm sure you can upgrade most of them from 9.1 to get them to where you need them, but I just found it easier to use 9.2. But mandrake 10....mmmmm...... looking tasty so far.

Personally, I'd wait for 10.0. It was scheduled to come out two days ago, so it should be available soon. Plus it comes with the 2.6 kernel, which will be sweet. I'm currently using 9.1, but I'll be upgrading as soon as 10 comes out. Of course, I have a laptop with ACPI, so I'm a little biased.

My 2 cents on the subject.

I echo the above sentiments in the sense that 9.2 is still too buggy:)

Install 9.1 if you have it or wait for 10 to become available and then try that.

Thats my 2 cents on the subject :)

My specs are :
P4 2400
256 ddr ram
Soltek 85MIV MB
120 Gig Western Dig HDD
Nvidia Geforce 2MX

Hi everyone! I also tried mandrake9.2 the first time around and found it to be just a bit buggy, even though I thought it was very cool. Toughest challenge was finding the right driver for my audigy platinum soundcard, otherwise, once I did get sound out I was pretty impressed the control I had over it with Kmix.
Well I used mandrake9.2 to download mandrake10.0 from one of the ftp sites and downloaded the iso's in 3 hours. I used K3B to burn the iso files to discs flawlessly. I then used these to install mandrake 10.0 and...WOW!
I'm pleased to say that I am now happily learning a new OS that isnt....you know. Although this is their beta version and a few weird little things happen here and there, I am truly amazed at the level of sophistication in not only the GUI but also the system itself. I was amazed at how quickly I copied large folders from my NTFS-formatted slave drive(80GB) to my new LINUX desktop. FAST!!!! By the way, does anyone know what I need to use to write to an NTFS partition if this is possible? Otherwise I guess I need to make a new one in there. Well, I look forward to learning about my new system and sharing any ideas I will have with you folks. :D

You'll need to load the right module infiniphunk, I'm not sure what its called or what the current level or write support is :) However it is there even if its only basic support.

Just my 2 cents but I srtared using Mandrake 9.1 as my first linux distro. It worked great. Then I went to 9.2. I was so unhappy with it, I switched to gentoo.

Just something to think about. Also, MDK 10 just came out yesterday so you might wait to see what people say about that.

It's really a matter of taste. I have at work several Linux boxes running diferent distros, MDK8.2 RH9, Fedora, MDK9.2.
actually I am running into some problems but I don't think it is distro related as I changed from RH9 to MDK9.2 and the problem still stands.
in breef - I'm running squid as a wccp server over a cisco7200. the machine was formelly running under MDK8.2 till the system disk crashed and I decided to 'move up'. the system runs fine for almost an hour then cache.log keeps giving me
2004/03/06 11:34:49| WARNING! Your cache is running out of filedescriptors
2004/03/06 11:35:05| WARNING! Your cache is running out of filedescriptors
2004/03/06 11:35:21| WARNING! Your cache is running out of filedescriptors

I did check squid's FAQ but it did not help

I really don't know what to do...

thanks,
roberto
