I'm planning on making a gateway, but I don't know what software I'll have to use to do this. Or do I just have to get all of the IP information for both NICs right?

Usually the external nic (ISP) uses DHCP while the internal (LAN) uses a static ip address.
Most distros already include everything you need to setup a router.
