I run SuSE 7.1 with kernel 2.4 and just today I noticed my system doing something very starnge.

Damn it, is doing it now !!!!

I can hear my cd bruner working, searching for a cd, but there's no disk in the tray. I ran top to see if there was anything running that may be causing this (there it goes again), but no everything loks normal. Now, I don't download programs from unreliable sources, so I don't think I've downloaded a trojan or anything alike.

Any ideas as to why this may be happening?

By the way I have scsi emulation activated in my system. There it goes again. Is like the system is trying to access the cdrw as though it was searching or trying to execute something.

One thing worth mentioning is that this happens for I would say 10 secons then it stops for lets say 5 seconds then it starts all over again.

What the heck is going on !!!

First check that the configuration for you CDRW is correct. scsi emulation, /etc/fstab etc.

This is from Caldera and may not pertain to your problem, but you can check it out anyways.

Description:

I am running eDesktop 2.4. The system appears to constantly poll the CDROM (light blinks about every two seconds). I rarely use the CDROM and would like to turn this function off. How do I do this?

Solution:

There is a little CD icon in the KDE systray from a program called "kautorun", which will autoplay Audio CDs, and autostart scripts on CD-ROMs that have them.

To terminate it, just click on the icon and select Quit.
