Ok, i am running clarkconnect 2.1 home, set up as a file server.
Ok, heres what i would like to be able to do:
I have 3 hard drives installed on the machine, 2 of which are samba shared to my LAN (/home/shared). I would like to be able to set a password, so when you go to network places, and browse to this computer, you have to enter a password to continue (so you cant browse the files without a password).
What would be ideal, is if i could set up 2 different users for this, one user name could just have read and execute access, and another, for full control over the files.

Right now i just have my fstab set up for default permissions - (auto mount, read only access)

But, i am a newbie, so if anyone could give me any info on this, or where to find the info, it would be great.

sorry i posted this in the wrong area before,
I am currently going thru these links,
http://www.samba.org/
http://www.justlinux.com/nhf/Networks/Samba.html
thanks to hayl for them

if anyone has any other info it would be appreciated

Thank you for your time,

Ok, i kinda got it set up. I looked thru the links, but couldnt get mine to configure like that. Is what i did, is when i mounted the drives, i set a user as the owner, mounted them to that users directory, and gave the user read write access. I think this will work for what i am using it for.

Now, a new problem. When i first browse to the linux machine on windows 2k, i have to enter a password to access the users home directory, EXACTLY what i want, but once i enter it, i never have to enter it again untill i reboot the win 2k machine.
I would like the connection to expire after closing the window. Just like it does when you browse to another windows machine and have to enter the password, as soon as you close the connection, you have to log in again.
Is there any way to make the connection expire after i stop accessing the linux machine, so that i have to enter the user/pass again?
The reason i want i like that, is because i have to leave my computer often, and others have access to it. I do not want them to have access to my file server.

Thanks for any input,
Blimpie

Have you thought about creating a group for Samba users and then create two accounts under that group? You could set up the folders for group permissions where applicable, and then user permissions to take it a step further.

Well, for the most part, i have the sharing setup. I just want it so that everytime i close the network window in windows to disconnect, to where i have to enter the password again to veiw any files. I just want it so that everytime i want to access the machine it asks for a password.
Thanks for the input tho

Well for my Samba shares you have to login to the GNU/Linux machine remotely to use them.
