What are you using to backup?

So I've decided that maybe its time to start backing up my system. Static IP is on order and sooner or later I may need something to fall back on. What are you people using? Plain old tar or what? I tried piping cp -a through tar but it wasn't working. I know there's some utilities and scripts out there, but Im curious as to what is easy/reliable.

The plain old tar combined with gzip ... That's the cool duet for me ... I don't remember the exact syntax, but I'm sure you don't have to pipe ... Maybe a little man tar would be welcome !
