anybody get this to work (accellerated) yet? running xfree86 4.3.0.1 in debian. apparently i need a module radeon.o instead of the ati driver in xfree86? maybe radeon_drv.o? i am thouroughly confused and I KNOW this card hates linux. people HAVE gotten it to work... i just need to find one such genius.
any ideas would be VERY appreciated.

Have you first gone through the previous threads on 'Radeon 7500' (http://justlinux.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=896080&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending) to see if you can find something to assist you in the setup and configuration?

in Red Hat, do you have accelleration? if so, what driver/module? radeon.o or radeon_drv.o? what version of xfree86?
my previous searches didn't return anything but they did today. thanks guys- i'll get back to you.

radeon.o is the kernel module for Radeon cards. It implements the kernel side of DRI.
radeon_drv.o is the XFree86 driver that uses DRI to talk to the radeon.o kernel module, and uses it to get hardware acceleration.
It's like the nvidia.o (or nvidia.ko if you use kernel 2.6) vs. nvidia_drv.o -- the first one is the kernel module needed to talk to the video card hardware, and the second one is the XFree86 driver needed so that X can talk to the kernel module. Your libGL.so (the one from Mesa in the case of the Radeon, and the one from nVidia in the case of nVidia) also talks to the kernel module -- somehow -- to get it to accelerate 3D operations.

right. this is the most frustrating thing i have EVER tried to do. i should just go nvidia and junk this laptop. :)
i recompiled XFree86 to 4.3.0. i used the drivers from http://gatos.sourceforge.net/ati.2.php . i now have the exact same glxgears output (assuming software accell) and a drm-kernel directory. any ideas?

what is this?
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIScreenInit failed because of a version mismatch
[dri] radeon.o kernel module version is 1.9.0 but version 1.100.0 or newer is needed
[dri] Disabling DRI

i am not about to go into how i got this working quite yet. i did, and i will TRY to make a HOWTO.
harware is accellerated. how do i make it faster? i did the little ("Option") "AGPMode" "4" thing. it worked a little. can i do more?
i'd like to see any XF86Configs for these Radeons if you got them. really quite odd how they can suck so bad.
-thanks again for the help. -c

I don't have a Radeon, but the error you were getting about the version mismatch probably means you needed to upgrade your kernel module version. Not that it matters anymore...
