In KDE does it play the startup music? If it does and the mp3 doesn't work then you might want to try killing artsd.

Try starting artsd using this

/opt/kde2/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 60 -m artsmessag

ok- artsd is running in control center and if go t individual sounds they play (most of the time) (sound blaster live) thanks after looking into it more it is just the theme in kde is not as good as Gnome.. is there one or where in KDE do you set the sounds like at startup and shrink window....

thanks

Try the KDE Control Center under Sound/System Notifications/KDE System Notifications.
