make probs

I posted this in the tech support thread with no luck, so I'll try here:

I'm trying to install the latest version of GAIM, and when I go to make the file, I get errors saying:
undefined reference to 'some file'

there are well over a hundred of these undefined reference files, and they are all in the gtk.h or glib.h headers, so why is this not working? I'm confused and a little upset since I have had beaucoup probs installing this. I'm running debian, but there are no binries of the latest version.

You might need install gtklib and glib. Those are necessary libraries for many applications.

I have these, and still no luck, but its starting to bug me, any other ideas?
