I am trying to find some really nice icons-around the quality of mac os x ones. Any ideas where to find some? I have searched google and found little. The included gnome icons I am using are rather ugly, imo.

Have you checked out the icons on kdelook.org? Sure, they're designed for KDE, but that doesn't mean you can't use them in GNOME.
The icons accompanying KDE and WindowMaker are pretty good too, though the styles differ greatly. And check out orava's icon store (http://www.linux.gr/logos/iconstore/) too. Some good stuff there.
