Well, I went to the KDE homepage, and downloaded all the i386 RPMs they had there. I started to install them, and got a dependency error (needed libmgt.so.0) so I ignored dependency and installed anyway (probably a mistake).
After I restarted and tried KDE, it would only show a grey screen and then dump me back to the login screen.

SO, I went to rpmfind.org and looked for libmgt and found it..excellent! I installed that, and tried the KDE RPMs again.. This time I'm getting another dependency problem (argh!!).

Does anybody have a NHF for installing KDE? :)

What really sucks is that before I could use an older version of KDE, but now I can't use it at all!

Ahh well.. Anyone who's running RedHat 7.0 and actually got KDE 2.0 to install is welcome to lend me a hand.. I'll be forever greatful! :)

Does this help... From www.kde.org (http://www.kde.org)

Downloading and Compiling KDE 2.0
The source packages for KDE 2.0 are available for free download at http://ftp.kde.org/stable/2.0/distribution/tar/generic/src/ or in the equivalent directory at one of the many KDE ftp server mirrors. KDE 2.0 requires qt-2.2.1, which is available from the above locations under the name qt-x11-2.2.1.tar.gz. KDE 2.0 will not work with older versions of Qt.

For further instructions on compiling and installing KDE 2.0, please consult the installation instructions and, if you encounter problems, the compilation FAQ.

Installing Binary Packages
Some distributors choose to provide binary packages of KDE for certain versions of their distribution. Some of these binary packages for KDE 2.0 will be available for free download under http://ftp.kde.org/stable/2.0/distribution/ or under the equivalent directory at one of the many KDE ftp server mirrors. Please note that the KDE team is not responsible for these packages as they are provided by third parties -- typically, but not always, the distributor of the relevant distribution.

KDE 2.0 requires qt-2.2.1, the free version of which is available from the above locations usually under the name qt-x11-2.2.1. KDE 2.0 will not work with older versions of Qt.

At the time of this release, pre-compiled packages are available for:

Caldera OpenLinux 2.4
Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 (potato) and Debian GNU/Linux Devel (woody)
Linux-Mandrake 7.2
RedHat Linux 7.0
SuSE Linux 6.4 (i386), SuSE Linux 7.0 (i386), SuSE Linux 7.0 (ppc) and SuSE Linux 7.0 (sparc)
Tru64 Systems
Please check the servers periodically for pre-compiled packages for other distributions. More binary packages will become available over the coming days and weeks.

Thanks for your reply, but I've read and re-read that. No go.

I've gone through their install guide step by step and still nothing. I've searched on the net and found that a lot of other RH7 users are having this problem, but I haven't seen a solution.

Looks like my system is broken (again). If I had a nickel for every application I've installed that caused my computer to stop working, I could buy microsoft!

Looks like I'm back to re-installing.. I don't even know why I try these things, it only causes me grief..

Strange. I never have problems with eDesktop 2.4!

X4, KDE2, Helix_Gnome, VNC, VMWare etc. all installed without a hitch.

Sorry as I don't have an answer other than what I posted earlier. I either just followed the included procedures or whatever was available from KDE.

Chatterjee, Yes you can use eDesktop as a server as it is the same as any other distro. Caldera also has a more 'Server' specific distro 'eServer 2.3'. Checkout the specifications for both.

eXtremist...

There's procedures here http://linux.nf/stepbystep.htm under KDE2.X for Caldera that may help.

Thanks.. I'll have a look..

AND.. If I can't get KDE 2 working, is there an easy way to roll back to the generic KDE that comes with RH7 without reinstalling the whole shabang?
