I don't know. What are you doing wrong? Can you please provide some information.. i.e. what errors if any you are getting, what exactly is not working, etc.

I haven't got a clue from what you've "outlined", but if you'll go HERE (http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/linux/)
and read and follow instructions to get F-prot running, I give you a link for a really nice gui frontend for it. F-prot updates hteir virus and macro files about 3 times a week. They've just posted a new version yesterday. You'll also need to access the support center for Linux for the "How-To's" (http://www.f-prot.com/support/helpfiles/unix/linux_ws/)

After downloading and reading the Readme's I open a terminal window and attempt to follow the read me instructions , but either the file can never be found or command unknown, so the installation nevers happens.

After unpacking the file...list the contents of the unpacked folder. (just copy and paste here)

What do the install instructions say to do? Are you in the correct directory? What error messages are you getting?

If that directory is not in your PATH (echo $PATH to see), then you will need to prefix the command with './' to tell the shell to look in the current directory for the command.

i.e.

./install.sh

did you cd into the directory that was created when you unpacked the files?

Do you have a virus preventing you from answering this thread? Are you being held incommunicado in a Central American country?:p

I just downloaded the f-prot virus scanner and did a comparison test.

It took MS with McAfee 27 minutes to scan 15907 files across a WAN connection (t3) from XP pro to w2k server via a drive mapping.

it took linux, using a smbmount to that same w2k server, across that same WAN connection during about the same time of day only 8 minutes and 21 seconds using f-prot. The linux box is on a slower processor too!

Im not good at math, but is that 3times faster? nice

Happybunny did you run the scanner in a terminal window?

Just on a side note:
how may viruses have people actually gotten on linux? I mean, I get emails that have all the windows viruses attached to them and such, but I just kind of chuckle and delete them.
I don't even know of any viruses that I've really heard about for linux?
Does f-prot remove the windows viruses as well even though they don't affect linux?

yes...i had fluxbox running and started scan via an aterm window of a mounted drive.

This last mydoom.f virus could have very easily been on a linux box, so yes, it is important to have virus scanning on a linux box, too.

That sounded weird so i am editing:
the mydoom.f virus put itself on our file servers and the next user to connect to it (prior to having protection) would then recieve the virus and it would start deleting files on this users drive mappings and so on and so on.

this was not an exploit, it simply deleted files and propogated around. Our novell servers (file servers) were affected the most, as users have permission to delete files. Users pc's had virus which deleted files from their mapped drives. Those drives could have easily been smb shares.

and yes, f-prot has virus definitions (protection) for any virus out there...specifically mydoom.f.

panda antivirus for linux is 100% completely free, and they will send you out virus warnings of new viruses, how they work, if they are binary and so on. other companies like command antivirus (http://www.commandcomm.com) charge you for linux antivirus, now command is also a very nice program, but its for linux, keep it free is my opinion! there is a rpm file location link at the bottom of my post for direct downloading.

Dear Linus,

Thanks a Bunch!
