This has happened to me a couple of times in the last 2 days. Both times were just after I left x. My console font is gibbled. A whole bunch of the characters just look like colons, except they're shifted down a few pixels, and instead of the dots being 2x2 pixels, they're only a single pixel.

System info:
Debian testing/unstable(woody)
Kernel 2.4.2
X v 4.02

*** note - this also happened to me once when running Debian potato, kernel 2.2.18, and the default version of X bundled with Debian 2.2r2

Do you also get a fuzzy display within X?
I am working on the same problem. I get a streaky display in X and when I quit to cli, I get the funny characters.
I am currently downloading xfree4. I hope this solves it.
If you get a fix I would much appreciate if you tell me how. :)

My X performance is fine... no streaky/fuzzy picture... I'm in X right now (the console is barely usable). I am running X4 now, so that didn't solve the problem for me. Hope it helps for you, though. If I find a solution, I'll let you know.

My problem is not fuzzy characters but everything is shifted to the left causing the first part of the prompt to disappear under the bezel. Terminals in X work fine as does X.

From reading other threads it seems the cli problem happens on GeForce MX cards. I may be wrong about this. It may be my XF86Config-4 has something wrong in it (can't post I'm at work).

Just noticed last night that after closing X my mouse would cause the cli to go all weird. It's like the mouse was entering 'return' and causing the prompt to advance and fill the screen.

I think I'll wait and post my XF86Config and log tonight and get some feed back from others.
