I am currently running both Mandrake 7.2 and FreeBSD 4.2. they both seem quite similar in structure such as the file system and many commands are the same. So what is the difference between the two? I know BSD is strictly based on UNIX whereas Linux was written by Linus torvald. However, with concern for functionality what is the difference between the two>?

From my own personnal experience, the BSD kernel is faster and programs seems to run faster under BSD as well (my experience comes from FreeBSD). Some commands may be the same but the directory structures are actually different in some respects I think. Some argue that the BSD structure is more intuitive. Other arguments include the BSDs being more secure and stable. Maybe some other people can offer insight.

I'm still learning about the BSDs as well but from short experiences they kick *ss!

In short, Linux is not the geekiest anymore, with Red Hat and Mandrake CONSTANTLY improving things for newbies, Linux just isn't for experts anymore. I wouldn't be surprised to see a BSD movement much like Linux's has been if Linux started appearing more and more on the average users desktop.

I can hear it now "BSD is better, Linux is for Ex-Microsoft converts!"

You know, im tired of people bashing other people because they are not "leet" or "geek" enough. I think it is all, frankly, a very stupid thing to do.
I mean, is it an individual's fault that he's just new to computers and beginning to learn about operating systems, and thus, chooses an "easy" (and in the end, you can hack the kernel in ALL distros, so there isnt much difference between an *easy* and a *geeky* one) distro?

I think this is one of the many problems of the Linux/Free Software movement, that we have many skilled and knowledgeable people, but alas, they look down on everybody else as lamers, and dont wanna give a cent back to the community.
