FS failure

One time after booting Mandrake 7.2 i got the message "Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 16:45" I dont remember messing with any of the files or shutting the computer off before unmounting the fs so what could my problem be? I cant boot linux now How can I fix this or am I out of luck?

boot with a boot disk and run an fsck on the partition. I don't know if this will actually solve the problem, but that's all I can suggest.
