I've just read instructions from NC State University regarding an upcoming "installfest". The LUG members will install (Or supervise while you install) your OS. BUT...they advise you to disable windows swap. I see it as too risky. What would make this operation necessary?

I've never heard anywhere that disabiling the windows swap is reccomended before you install linux. You just have to make sure that your disk is defragmented so that all the data is at the front of the drive. This prevents any of it from potentialy getting cut off during the partitioning process.

Dang Communist propoganda!!
Well, maybe they have a point: if they're going to be using FIPS to split your hard disk, then all the data will be moved to the front of the disk so they can split off as much as possible from the end. It's impossible for Defrag to move the swap file, so if the swapfile is near the end of the disk, it can't be moved and they won't be able to split your disk.
How about you disable virtual memory, defrag the disk, and then re-enable just a small swap file for the time being.
