Moving to /dev/random where all the other Best/Which distro questions are posted.
Have a look through the very, very long sticky thread on the subject in /dev/random and stay tuned to the upcoming 'Best Distro' forum.
BTW... All distros should have their hardware requirements posted on their websites for each version.
for Distro Info go to www.distrowatch.com
for HArdware requirements go to the website for each Distro you are interested in.

Bon Bon got him one of those fancy "desktop distros" one time. He said it must of sat on his desktop for 6 months, still didn't do nothing. So he got a fancier desktop, one of those "Scandanavian style with the yellar wood and chrome legs" darn if that distro still didn't do nothing!.
So he wrote to the Suzy people and asked for his money back, I told him he wouldn't get nothing since he had downloaded it off the web. He said it wouldn't hurt to try. Said Sears sent him refunds all the time on stuff he borrowed from the neighbors.

i am terribly new at this too and i am looking for a great desktop replacement....
I have just loaded RH9, Mandrake 9.2 and SUSE Pro 9....I am kicking the tires on all of them on lots of different hardware.
This is the beauty (and downfall) of linux....you can pick what ever flavor suits you, use what ever windows manager you like, and run any web browser you can find (even IE if you want!).
It is a great freedom, but makes it hard to just pick the "right" one.

That's why you will have to try many distros to see which one fits all your needs :)

There isn't a 'best distro'.
It's all up to how well your hardware is supported by the distro and kernel version, what you install and how well you configure everything.
If you are not planning on running any type of servers, then omit installing Apache, Sendmail/Procmail, MySQL, Squid etc.
