Yet again, I'm trying to find the holy grail of distros for use on my dell inspiron laptop. Granted, I'm somewhat of a newbie, and I know installing Linux on a laptop involves more work, but I'm trying to find a distro that will allow me to rid myself of windoze completely (well, except for Diablo II ;) ). Currently, I've tried Debian (X won't recognize video card at all, after much configuration), Mandrake7.1(graphic anomalies; video card not fully supported), Mandrake7.2(better support, but other various problems), and Stormix7.0(my PCMCIA NIC not supported fully). I'm thinking about giving SuSE 7.1 a try and I just want some opinions on it, whether it be installed on a laptop or desktop. I'd appreciate any opinions on SuSE 7.1. Thanks :D

havent used 7.1 yet, but suse 7.0 was the only distro/(yast2 installer) i tried on my current desktop that could find/setup all my hardware with out fooling around/manually fixing it

mandrake 7.2 was second, it did everything except my sound card

so my guess is that 7.1 would be even better at covering more pc's

good luck! somebody was trying to sell a boxed retail 7.1 over in hardware trading, i think

Well, that's one thing that doesn't work across the board with the distros I've tried; my ESS Maestro 3i soundcard. It's supported with the 2.4 kernel, but I haven't been able to successfully compile it, so I'd just assume screw it until I'm more experienced :p. Yeah, I know I'm expressing a typical "newbie-mentality", but I just want something stable from which I'll be able to comfortably learn the intricate aspects of linux. Sorry, I'm ranting... ;)

Mandrake should be your best option. I have a friend who runs drake 7.1 and well everything ran righrt off the bat.

SuSE 7.1

I had zero trouble with it's install.

Plus it comes with the 2.4 kernel and XFree86 4.0.2

You'll just need to update KDE from the 2.0.1 that it comes with to the new 2.1 that was just released a few days ago.

Woo hoo!! Bought SuSE7.1 today and installed without a hitch. And my soundcard finally works! Now to ditch windoze and my journey to linux-nirvana shall be finally undertaken.
