I'm getting sick of my crapy XP machine, and all the badness that comes along with it. So i'm starting a new project, for my home, to convert them too linux. I will be listing random programs and hopefully someone can tell me if linux has a version of it. Somthings may have to use wine but i havn't had any good luck with it, there was one day back a ways but then i installed a new distro and it never worked again.

Some basic stuff:

Microsoft Pictureit!
--(not gimp, somthing to make greating cards and fliers)
Itunes media player
--(somthing like it, not xmms. Maybe Skinable too, needs a media library)
turbo tax
(maybe i have to use wine)

More too come when i get home!

i do have them using mozilla and i'll check out openoffice.org and mess with that. and any good customizale desktops, i use gnome now, don't like kde much, those are the only two i actually have tested. Anymore ideas too make them think linux is Win(i know its a linux sin) but i really want them to be happy with a computer.

There's quite a few similar threads if you search around. However, some suggestions (not having used any of the software you mention):

1. OpenOffice.org Draw is quite good; Scribus is a DTP package; Or trying SodiPodi, although I couldn't get used to the interface

2. JuK?

3. GnuCash, although if TurboTax does special stuff for sending to gov't, then WINE may be the answer.

As for desktops, take a look at xpde, and also IceWM with their XP theme.

We do have a long, long thread somewhere on equivalent Linux software.

One link a member has in his signature.

I've seen it mentioned in a similar thread before, but instead of using the TurboTax boxed program, they have a web based system that allows you to do the same thing, at a cost of course. But that way all you need is a browser, so it's pretty much OS independent.

Still haven't located that thread on equivalent Linux/Windows software, but here are a couple that may help.
