I have not been using LINUX for a while because of a problem with my x-server in RH 7.1, but today I installed an old version of Open Linux that I had liying around that I got for $5 Canadian (thats like $0.06 American!). The X-server worked better than ever, but I am only using OL temperarily because I prefer GNOME sometimes. Does anyone know of a good distro that:
Comes with:
KDE
GNOME
(And preferably: GIMP, A .wpd compatible word processor [im dreaming now], and XMMS)
And has good sound card & printer support?
And there has to be a free ISO on the internet.
Please dont tell me how to find one, I am looking in other places, I was just wondering if any distro fit this description.
Maybe ill try RH 7.2

679,903,232 Mandrake81-cd2-ext.i586.iso

well a good distro, is suse 6.3, it's very fast and simple to work, this was the distro that i learn to work with linux, is very good, and you have the option of choosing gnome or kde.

You really only need the first one to install.
the other two just have extra things on them.
I have used some things on #2, like MySQL development package.
I have no idea what is on #3
basically the #2, #3 are just full of .RPM packages that you can install if you want.

It would be a good idea to get all three iso's since it will ask you in most cause to load all three

Yeah, I would like SUSE, but I dont think you can get the full version off the internet, and I haven't seen it in stores.

I just got a 7.3 Personal Edition for £40 in the UK today - excellent installation program. Very good configuration tools, I chose "Quick Config" for everything, and it worked on S/card, printer, and Modem.
My next job is to connect my USB scanner and give it a whirl.

does anyone if (and where :)) i can download suse iso's? i've heard that you can "install it from ftp", but what's that? isn't that just simply downloading an iso from an ftp?
I don't have problems with buying stuff, but I prefer to test it at first, and then pay for it..

2 things:
1- www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org)
2- Suse stopped distributing .iso's after 7.1 (or maybe 7.0, i forget), so you CAN'T download an .iso for the newer Suse's for free. If you want Suse that bad, BUY IT! german kids need to eat too :p
rule of thumb -> if it isn't on linuxiso.org, it isn't freely available for download, legally
you can do an ftp install of the latest suse, if you want to try that, go for it
have a nice day! :)

Slightly off-topic, but after installation of Suse 7.3 I ran the Scanner Config tool.
Knock me over with a feather, but it correctly identified my usb Epson 640u Perfection, and configured it.
This is the first Linux Distro to do it. The serious point is that now I can completely remove Windows from my machine.
I can't believe it.

You download a bunch of disks that gets you a working basic install up to the point where you can use your internet connection to connect to the ftp server. Then you point the installer to that server and it installs all the selected packages directly from there. The details are outlined on www.suse.com (http://www.suse.com)

Well, I dont want to get an illegle copy. Ill use Mandrake for now and if I see SUSE in a store I may get it. Its just that of all the people, out of the developers of every product, the only people who get paid are the people that distribute it. Oh well, at least most of them put it up for free on there webiste.
