Help
Really new to Linux although some experience in past with Unix in the old days.
Question is, HOW TO A START THE GUI???

Well, assuming that you installed KDE or Gnome (or some other GUI), at the command prompt, type:
startx
I know that doesn't always work for some people. Personally, when I'm in Slackware, I have to type:
starx -- -bpp 32
If I don't - screen resolution and certain things are just...not right...
Mess around with it. (And make sure KDE or Gnome are installed.)

I installed KDE but at the prompt when I type startx I get squat (bash: startx: command not found)
Any suggestions other than reading this book from start to finish?

What distro are you using? If RedHat or Mandrake, did you install and configure X during the install?

Didn't the first time, did the second, thanks
Now how to best set up the modem. Have been able to do other "normal" stuff but haven't discovered where to setup hardware.

You just don't want to tell us what distro you are using. Is it that much of a secret? ;)
What kind of modem? Have you checked to see if it's a winmodem?
Kppp would be a good place to start since your using KDE. In fact there's a NHF on Kppp and a few on modems.
