I have Linux Mandrake 7.0. It's not installed yet, but I'm trying to.
In install.htm on the cd:
When I try the first one (boot from CD) it just restarts windows.
Second one, same thing.
Third one gets into the DrakX install thing, so I pick English language and Standard install type, just normal until I get to the SCSI interface screen:

Do you have any SCSI interfaces?

I think for a moment, then hit 'no' because I don't really. The screen just comes back up. So I click it again just like any normal user would probably do. Same thing. It just keeps displaying that message. So, I click yes just to see what will happen. It comes up with a list of scsi things--which doesn't help (because I don't have a SCSI). But I end up trying every one of them (on autoprobe)... none of them work...
When I boot up windows again, I go into the config. stuff and, under the SCSI section, there is, in fact, my HD:
Promise Ultra66 (tm) IDE controller
But it's not a scsi, I know it.
(just wondering, can it even be a SCSI if it's an IDE controller? I stink at hardware stuff but I'm a lot better at software things) So I keep trying but it won't work.

My comp is:
(about 1 year old now)
P3-600mhz
40x dvd-rom (cd-rom compatible)
24x cd-rw
HD is up there
i have a LAN too, but it probably isn't this either..
<sound & video omitted, it prolly isn't these>

Linux rocks as far as I've heard and it sounds cool so I really wanna get it installed! :) Plus I heard it goes a bit faster on the net, so now i'm re-re-trying to get it installed :p

Have you tried the Ultra66 option?

No, how do you turn that on?

If it's a SCSI controller in that list, then it's not there...

Trigger-X just posted this in another thread

Ok. I found a Installtion tutorial on http://www.linux-mandrake.com and it really helps I will try to install tommorrow. It showed how to use DiskDrak the partionting tool so I think I know what I need to do... If I post another message You will probably wont know it screwed up again

The Installation tutorial may help you.

ok, um... I've searched tons of places and found this:

Red-Hat doesn't support the Ultra 66 controller. Either did Mandrake until the 7.1 version (or they did, but it was disabled from the start because of some bug it might have)... (I have v7.0)
To fix this problem, I can either:

1. get a patch for the kernel, which really doesn't help sense Linux isn't installed yet, or

2. pass the parameters 'ide1=xxx ide2=xxx', etc. (xxx would be the IO ranges of my HD, I guess) to the kernel. Which I really don't know how to do, but I really think it would work.

Any ideas?
Thanks,

I fixed it... but now there's a problem partitioning my HD, if you wanna help it's in a new topic called 'Problem on partitioning'
here's how: I found a page that says to put some commands to the kernel so I, on the boot of linux, typed:
linux ide1=blahblah ide2=etcetc
and it worked..., so I was happy for a bit, until I ran into this problem--then I had to go back into study mode, heh
