Let me begin by saying that this is all new to me...

I have an iMac (G3) which has an internal CD drive (tray variety). I have replaced Mac OS with YDL 3.0.1. As I went through the manual, I noticed that the CD icon did not appear on the desktop. I didn't pay much attention to this until last night when I tried to use the CD drive.

I put the CD in (a read-only CD containing digital images), but nothing happened and I couldn't figure out how to open the disk.

I have searched other help sites, but the jargon is a little overwhelming or the threads are too long to attempt to read through. I hope someone here has some helpful advice.

Thanks,
Sa-nay

Try opening the Terminal window and typing in

mount /dev/cdrom

That should pick up the contents of the CD drive.

OK, I did what you suggested and this is my computer's response:

bash: mount/dev/cdrom: No such file or directory

The response is the same whether I am logged in as the main user with the root password or not.

Now what should I do?

Hmmm....

Could you try typing in the command

dmesg

in the terminal window and let us see the results?

Thanks,
Brian

in a terminal shell, try:

ls -l /dev/cdrom

If it exists, it should appear as a link to the actual cdrom device

I think you need a space in between mount and /dev/cdrom. YDL is Redhat based and at least for me the Desktop icon does not show up until after I manually mount the cd.

Tried this earlier and had the same result... I'm off to try the other ideas - back in a flash.

Here is my computer's response:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jan 26 18:39 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc

I don't know if you really want to see all this, but since you asked...

Don't mac's use SCSI busses rather than IDE?

The dmesg file is stating that it can't find it on the ide bus, but is looking for something on scsi (/dev/sda).

This is just a guess, but maybe following the instructions on www.tldp.org for using scsi might help.
I've never had to deal with scsi other than to install a disk reader once, and that had a specific module to be loaded, and it was also usb, so I have absolutely zero experience here. Sorry.

If someone else thinks this might be helpful advice, I will need a translation... ;)

There are two types of hardware connections to PCs and Mac in the world: IDE and SCSI. What Knute is saying that Macs use a SCSI connection to link up hardware like disk drives, CD ROMs, and other devices to the processor in your PC.

The technical details are unimportant for your purposes, really. Knute is suggestion that you go to the Linux Documentation Project Web site and look up the instructions on how to mount a SCSI-type CD.

Your output from dmesg was verbose, but one thing it does tell me is that I don't think Yellow Dog is seeing your CD-ROM drive at all. All those "ATAPI device hdc:" passages in the error message--that's your CD-ROM drive. But when it repeatedly goes on to say it can't read the drive, that's a sign of trouble.

What will be interesting is how to fix it. I presume you searched the YDL site for a similar issue on your specific machine model, right?

Peace,
Brian

Sorry, I didn't even think about technical level. I simply posted what I thought may be going on. Again, I apologize for not communicating with you effectively. :)

Thanks for everyone's help so far.

My husband and I have searched other sites, and we now have a post in at the YDL newbie mailing list (the archives are available, but they aren't searchable). We haven't found anything related to this problem with CDroms in general, let alone with our machine model.

I will keep checking in and will let you all know if the other list turns up anything.

I will also check out the Linux Documentation Project website and see if there is any further assistance to be found there.

Thanks again,

knute

What model do you have?

Also if you have the specs on the CDR post it. One of us may get bored and look it up and figure it out. ;)

I found this on the yellow dog web site under hardware support. maybe it will help.

* If you have problems detecting an onboard SCSI drive, add this:

/sbin/modprobe sym53c8xx

To:

/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit

and YDL will detect it.

Also, early ATTO SCSI cards require a firmware upgrade.

I hope this is what you are looking for:

iMac 333 (ours is grape) released in April 1999
333-MHz PowerPC G3 processor
Internal 24x-speed (maximum) CD-ROM drive

We found this info in a list of technical specifications on the Apple website.

I just found this on the YDL web site also, but it seems to be about Power Macs, but I just have an iMac (PowerPC). I do not know if these are the same, but I do know that my computer is not pictured at the top of that page.

Ok, so I just found a page titled "Accessing my Drives 4.2" (http://linux-newbie.sunsite.dk/lnag_drives.html) at the Linux Newbie Guide FAQs which we found through the Linux Documentation Project. This had a series of directions to mount a CDROM.

Unfortunately, it still didn't work. Here are my computer's responses to the directions found on the above-mentioned page.

[root@localhost sa-nay]# mount -t auto /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: No medium found
[root@localhost sa-nay]# mkdir /mnt/cdrom
mkdir: cannot create directory `/mnt/cdrom': File exists
[root@localhost sa-nay]# ls -l /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jan 26 18:39 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc
[root@localhost sa-nay]# mount -t auto /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: No medium found

Any further thoughts?

Hey, so a friend of ours was over for lunch and happened to figure out our problem.

From the YDL menu, he went to System Tools and then to Disk Management. This opens up the User Mount Tool. As long as a CD is in the disk drive, I can select the CDrom and click the mount button. This then opens up a window showing the contents of the CD. In order t eject the CD, we have to click the unmount button in the User Mount Tool, then we can eject.

The funny thing was that it won't work with a burned CD - we can only use a manufactured CD (we put in the CD that came with our new 3 button mouse).

When I pointed out that there still wasn't a CDrom icon on the desktop, our friend right clicked on the desktop and added a new icon for the CDrom. Now I can insert a manufactured CD and double click on the CD icon and it automatically mounts the CDrom. To eject, I right click the CD icon and then click on eject.

It was almost too easy. (OK, nothing that required this much effort and wondering is too easy.)

Thanks for all your help. Please let me know if I am hugely overlooking something in the way we have this set up.

Thanks again,
Sa-nay

No, your friend is right. I think we had a case here of over-geeking the problem and solution! D'oh!

Glad to hear it's fixed!
