I have decided to do the debian install on a 12 gig hard drive. What would be the best way to partition the harddrive to get the best ussage for the drive? At present I have
256 meg swap
4 gig \
8 gig home
this is running under mandrake 7.2

Partitioning is hard to say what is best. What is you experience level? What do you use the machine for? Several different factors can come into play with partitioning. I find it nice to have a seperate /home partion because it allows me to reinstall without losing my user settings. You could make a seperate partiton for anything. Some people just like having one large partition and if they screw things up, they wipe everything out, start over, and try to learn from thier mistakes. You could even make a seperate partition for /var/spool/mail so that you dont lose you email. I have even used Partition magic to resize my partitions from time to time ( ofcourse with a full backup and my fingers crossed). My point is I have found that different people like different partitoning schemes. there is no "right" way to do it. You need to play around and find what suits you best and what you like the best.

While partitioning is a matter of preference I recommend adding a /usr partition and if you plan on keeping all the /debs you download probably a /var partition as well.

Does debian's boot partition still have to be in the first 1024 cylinders?
Your partition setup is good for someone interested in trying a few distro's to find which one you prefer.
