I just loaded Mandrake 8.0 and ran into a slight problem. The mobo in the sys is an ECS K7S5A with an Sis735 chipset. That's just fine, but the Sis 900 LAN interface isn't. The auto detect does fine with most everything else, but i don't have a half a clue how to get that LAN interface(NIC wannabe) into the mix. Since I'm hooked up to a Linksys Router for DSL, I need that LAN for internet access. A buddy from PC911 gave me a lead, but I could not find what he thought may have been hidden in the Mandrake install. I'm fairly certain my inexperience with Linux is the main problem.
Anybody got a clue on the specific problem I'm having AND where a newbie can buy a clue?
TIA!

Good news for Newbies:

You can always buy a clue at Google (http://www.google.com), it's the place for clues.

:D

Seriously, though- go to google and type:+"sis 900" +Linux as your search criteria. You'll find a lot of info concerning your problem.
F.Y.I.: It looks like Sis has redone their site, so some of the links you find won't work.

Thanx for that lead. I'm already a Google addict and did that search a couple days ago. I need to clarify something. I'm a Linux Virgin! I'm totally lost under the hood. I was hoping this website and forum would have some Dummy type guides fer us Linux newbies. Am i just not going far enough into the links???

Did you checkout the Linuxnewbie NHF's (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/)?

Well HardDrake is rather limited, it can't detect everything. I would first see if your nic card has a specific Linux driver for it. I am guess that since HardDrake didn't detect your NIC it didn't install tulip, so that would be your next step. Hopefully once you have tulip(this is a generic nic driver, sorta) installed, you should be able to be up an running.
