I loaded 7.2 with the Everything option checked. Now that everything is loaded and running decently I want to see if I can get a little more speed out of Linux. I checked the Gnome system monitor and everything is fine with the exception of my memory usage. It seems to be a little high. It is always in the yellow and close to the end of the scale. I have seen the runtime/services setting but I don't know what should be loading and what does not need to be loaded. If it is too long of an explanation to help me, you could just point me to an article or reference. Just a side note. I have always used windows since 3.1 but just recently picked up on Linux(from college).I must say this is the first time in a long while that I have actually had fun with an OS. That is foreign for most poeple...they see an os as just a way to use programs. But the Unix os's seem to be more fun to me. Just a though. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Is your system connected to the Internet ?
If you've installed every option there are lots of servers installed and running on your system which take up alot of memory that you aren't using.
In addition if you are connected to the internet with all of these services installed your system may be open to attack from the "Packet Monkey" port scanner searching for running services.
The bottom line is that you should uninstall any services ...like web/ftp serversthat you specifically do not want to run on your system. Read the NFH (Newbie Help Files)files on the main page and do a search on the Internet ..... you will find no shortage of sites offering help with getting rid of your unneeded services.
Since it is new install you might be advised to format and re-install Linux and de-select services you don't need.

Yes, the 'everything install' loads a lot of services...but by default 60% of them are off and/or not configured. vxmine started he used Gnome sytem monitor to check the performance, this means he had an X session running (which always have been nortorious with using lots of system resources, expecially memory).
I would suggest loading Webmin (http://www.webmin.com/webmin/) and go to the System tab and Bootup and Shutdown. This will tell you what is running and what loads on bootup. Webmin lets you mess with everything possable on your system, it is very handy. Word of advice, if you don't know what something is, learn about it before you mess with it...common knowledge :)

Stopping and starting services is quite simple in RedHat 7.2. In GNOME, just click Programs -> System -> Services (think it is that, not at a Linux box atm). Then remove any services you don't need in each runlevel (e.g. nfs) by unticking their boxes and also clicking Stop in one of the menus.
When you're finished just save each runlevel and you'll probably find your system a bit speedier (especially if you have a P133 like one of my systems).
