Hi everyone,

Has anyone had a problem with the graphical login in SuSE 9, namely that after one or two reboots, the graphical login fails completely except for the failsafe option? What happens is that the screen blanks and then the login prompt comes back up on the screen. The WMs and GUIs can be started manually from the failsafe xterm prompt, but this makes it difficult to use things like YaST2 if you need to. Anyone got any idea what's wrong? 8.1 and 8.2 never had this problem.

Can any one help please. I can only use linux in failsafe mode after a few logins in KDE. Same thing happens if i make a new user account. The root also starts to get the same problem..so can any one help please.

I have SuSE 9.0 Pro installed multiple times (dev, prod & rescue) on my laptop, main home and work pc's and have never had a login problem.

I would suggest you search the SuSE knowledgebase etc. to see if this is a known problem and if not, contact their support as you are entitled to support if you purchased their distro as I have.

Have you checked your X11 server error logs? Or is there errors in your startup logs regarding driver issues with you video card.

Id try also running SaX2 in terminal also to get your XF86Config settings tested and working.

Silly point here, but are you sure that the system is unmounting your partitions correctly on shutdown? Also check /var/log/messages for I/O errors from your hard disk.

BTW Yast can be run from command line by simply typing : yast2 and you will command line frontend.

Also what display card do you have and with what driver etc...
