Allright, I gave up with mandrake, so I got redhat 9.0. I'm trying to install it right now. Except, when I insert the first disk and press "continue", my screen turns of and it does nothing. I've already checked all the disk, and I had no problems. Thanks in advance. :)

Are you getting to the grapical install part? If so, then you can try using a text based installation in case it is the X server that is causing the problem.

Allright, I did the text install thing, except, when I reboot after all the install stuff is over, my monitor shuts off and nothing happens.
What should I do now?

I run RH9 too and im puzzled by what u meen when u say that your screen turns off, do you mean the moniter turns off or does it just go blank?
Also, might I suggest re-burning a new copy of the disks.
Another question would be your boot system, is it the only op sys on your computer or do u run a dual boot..

The screen really turns off. The light that is usually green is brown.

The disks area good, that I know.

It's the only os on my system.

Check Redhat to see if your hardware is compatible and supported. If it is not, then dont even bother trying to install. Go get compatible hardware.

I learned this the hard way more than once.

another idea would be just to get Fedora. RH9 goes unsuported in May

I had this same problem on a system that had an ancient video card...an original Matrox Mil. with something like 1 or 2 MB of video memory on it.
Switching over to a Matrox Mil. G-200 (8MB vid mem) took care of that particular problem for me.

What is the make and model of your graphics card, and how much video memory does it have installed?

I agree with Marklar, check the HCL and I would also see about installing fedora. what are your spec's? including video, dound card ptoc's monitor do you have SCSI or IDE hd's? did you run into any problems during the text install? did you get any errors?

I had the same problem with my RH9 install, it did not recongnise my FX5200 nVidia card, and thought is was a Vesa card. so I did the text install, and booted into CLI mode, downloaded the nVidia Driver and installed it, and now it works great. not sure if this is your problem, but it was mine :) I hope this helps.

No flames intended, but it does not seem to indicate a hardware problem, IMHO, due to the fact that the installation completed in text mode.

It seems, as I suspected and you confirmed by doing a text based install, that the refresh rate for your video card is set too high for your screen to display and therefore is going from green light to brown/orange light.

To fix: I would boot into RH as text only (ie if you installed LILO as the boot manager, type linux 1 to boot to single user (or root) mode.

You can then run the command xf86config to configure your mouse, keyboard, video card and monitor.

You should then (hopefully!!:)) be able to reboot and login via the graphical login screen.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Moving to the Installation forum as Software is really meant for specific software problems and Installation for ... well ... Linux distro installation problems.

Just curious how you define "completely stable?" I've had no problems with Fedora at all...

I don't know how he defines it, but this is how I do.,

It crashes whenever I try to activate a server, such as Apache, FTP or even telnet servers. (does not do this in RH9)

It also hangs whenever I run a 3D game, such as UT2k3 or Quake3, not all the time, but from time to time. (does not do this in RH9)

the VNCserver also hangs ( not the computer, just the software) (does not do this in RH9)

So there are still kinks to work out of Fedora core 1. it is a great start, but it is no Rh9.

RH 9 had a few bugs as well IMHO... I don't use those applications so I guess I never noticed... most of the bugs I've noticed in Fedora seem to be GNOME 2.4 bugs.... anyways, I was just curious...

As far as I know, there is not such thing as a "Bugless" distro of linux, they all have bugs, ranging from very minor, to major. so no one distro is really better than another. but it is getting there, they get better as time goes on. at least none of the bugs I have run into have been "Major" even the server problems were of a minor nature.
