I've just installed Mandrake 7.2 a few days ago. Running KDE as root worked fine as did Gnome, Enlightenment etc. under other user accounts.
I've played around with some nVidia drivers and Mesa libs the last couple of days, as well as installed a new LogiTech mouse (running as PS/2) today.

Xserver (Xfree86 4.0.1) + window manager is still running without problems for "normal" users, but when I tried to start KDE (and afterwards Gnome from an .xinitrc file), the Xserver shut down immediatly after showing the introductury blue screen.
The messages were similar to those from my other (working) user accounts - no errors, just drivers loading and then "Xserver shut down".

What is wrong?

*ahhhs*

root's path is normally truncated substantially from that of a normal user.

you may need to explicitly expand your path in xinitrc.

To Lorithar: What you suggest might work. Unfortunately I'm still a linux amateur, os I would prefer the advice to be a little bit more specific. That is: explain to this fella so more or less step by step what to do.
